Firstly, congratulations on your engagement! Now the fun stuff begins.
Planning a wedding is an exciting time, but it can also be very overwhelming as it comes with a lot of details to consider, including the legal requirements for getting married. One of the key components to remember is the notice period you need to give before tying the knot, so let's get stuck into everything you need to know.
Understanding the Notice of Intended Marriage
The first step to getting legally married is to submit a “Notice of Intended Marriage” (NOIM). This is a legal document that informs the authorities of your intention to marry and must be lodged with your chosen Celebrant.
How Much Notice Is Required?
You must give at least one month’s notice before your intended wedding date. This means that you should plan to submit your NOIM at least one month prior to your ceremony. However, there are a few important points to keep in mind:
Processing Time: Although the minimum notice is one month, it’s best to give yourself more time for planning. Consider factors like booking venues, organising vendors, and ensuring that all your guests can attend. Celebrants themselves can often be booked out months in advance so it's best to get this process started early.
Shorter Notice Period: In certain situations, it is possible to marry in less than one month after submitting your NOIM. This requires special circumstances, such as medical emergencies or military deployment. If you wish to pursue this option, you will need to complete additional documentation and possibly provide evidence to support your request.
Expired NOIM: If you like to plan a long time in advance or if your wedding is postponed, remember that your NOIM is only valid for a maximum of 18 months. If it expires, you will need to re-submit the form and provide another month’s notice.
As I do with all of my couples, your celebrant will walk you through the details of how to complete the NOIM, including all the necessary documentation and proof of identity requirements to ensure you have everything in order.
Getting married is one of the most exciting events in life, so whether you’re planning a big celebration or a more intimate gathering, make sure to factor in the notice period to ensure your wedding goes off without a hitch. Happy planning!
